Aim for simplicity. Use standard symbols where possible. Label everything clearly. Always test for understanding by asking participants to explain the diagram back to you. Sometimes, despite best efforts, participants struggle with abstracting the system, so be ready to offer concrete examples.

  1. Define the system or concept to diagram.

  2. List all key components.

  3. Identify the connections between components.

  4. Choose the appropriate diagram type (e.g., flow chart, block diagram).

  5. Draw the basic structure of the diagram.

  6. Add flow indicators to show direction and process.

  7. Label all components and connections clearly.

  8. Simplify the diagram to its essential elements.

  9. Review and refine the diagram for clarity and accuracy.
