Define guidelines for successful brainstorming. Foster collaboration and maximize idea generation. Create a safe and productive environment for team ideation.

  • Shared understanding of brainstorming rules.

  • A productive ideation culture.

  • More effective brainstorming sessions.

Review these rules before each session. Keep them visible. Assign a facilitator to gently enforce them. Sometimes, sticking to 'one conversation' is tough, but worth it.
These rules help guide effective brainstorming:

  1. Defer judgment: Encourage everyone to share and build on ideas.

  2. Encourage wild ideas: Think beyond constraints for creative leaps.

  3. Build on ideas: Use "and" instead of "but" to maintain a positive tone.

  4. Stay focused: Keep the discussion targeted and avoid tangents.

  5. One conversation: Ensure full attention and facilitate idea building.

  6. Be visual: Use Post-its and drawings, no artistic skill needed.

  7. Go for quantity: Aim for 100 ideas in 60 minutes.
