Establish shared understanding of current challenges. Align the team on the problem context. Surface critical constraints and create a foundation for a productive workshop.
The scene is set. Context is established. You're ready to work.
This should be FAST. Enforce time limits strictly. This is a great first exercise in product strategy or scoping workshops. Discourage solutions at this stage; focus on context and problems. If participants propose solutions, redirect to problem description. Record everything said without filtering; patterns will emerge. This exercise reveals whether the team has a shared understanding or divergent views. If major alignment gaps surface, pause and address them before proceeding. Keep energy high and the pace brisk. Sometimes people struggle to avoid solutions; it's okay if it's not perfect.

  1. Set a 10-minute timer.

  2. Each participant shares current challenges.

  3. Capture all points on a board without debate.

  4. Include constraints, problems, and context.

  5. Keep contributions brief (30-60 seconds each).

  6. No solutions or discussions yet.

  7. Quickly scan all captured points.

  8. Circle the most critical or recurring themes.

  9. Identify any missing context.

  10. Agree on the scope for the workshop.

  11. Reference the board throughout the remaining exercises.
