Problem Tree Analysis

Problems are like trees with roots and branches. This method helps you dig below surface symptoms. Start with a problem. Map its causes as roots and effects as branches. This reveals hidden connections. Seeing the whole tree shows you where to act for the biggest impact. Part of the LUMA collection.

  • Find intervention points.

  • Build shared understanding.

  • Move beyond symptoms.

  • Plan effective solutions.

  • A problem tree showing causes and effects.

  • Systematic problem analysis.

  • Clear distinction between root causes and symptoms.

  • Keep asking "why?" to get past the obvious.

  • Don't stop at the first answer; dig deeper to find root causes.

  • Connect related items to show the system at play. Sometimes participants struggle with 'what leads to' - be patient and offer some examples to get them going.

  1. Write the main problem on a card and place it in the center as the tree trunk.

  2. Ask, "Why does this happen?"

  3. Write the causes below the trunk as roots.

  4. Ask, "What does this lead to?"

  5. Write the effects above the trunk as branches.

  6. Keep asking "why?" and "what?" to deepen the analysis.

  7. Look for connections between different parts of the tree.

  8. Identify the best places to intervene for maximum effect.
