Ideation/Creativity

Ideation Rules

This exercise sets ground rules for effective brainstorming. It fosters psychological safety, encourages wild ideas, and promotes building on each other's thoughts. It's a foundational exercise for any ideation session.

Participants will create a safe space for creative risk-taking. They will establish productive behaviors for group ideation and build creative confidence. This sets the stage for high-quality idea generation.
Participants will establish ideation rules, promote productive brainstorming, and contribute to a creative culture.
Model the rules yourself. Gently redirect rule-breakers rather than halting the flow. Celebrate wild ideas and the act of building on them. Keep the rules visible during all ideation activities. Sometimes, participants struggle with the 'no judgment' rule; be prepared to address this explicitly.

  1. Introduce the 7 core ideation rules (5 min).

  2. Practice with a quick warm-up brainstorm (5 min).

  3. Post the rules visibly and commit to enforcing them (3 min).

  4. Refer back to the rules throughout ideation sessions (2 min).
