• Challenge interface assumptions • Practice designing for unfamiliar users • Explore fundamental usability • Encourage radical thinking
Participants recognize how design depends on assumptions. They enhance empathy for unfamiliar users. They improve creative problem-solving skills. The team demonstrates higher engagement and participation. Participants share concrete examples of values and working preferences.
Adapt the activity to focus on different alien capabilities. This provides a fresh perspective. It may resonate better with certain groups. I find this works well when teams are stuck.
Encourage questioning every assumption. Push for explanations of choices. Connect to accessibility. Don't be afraid to pause and re-explain the concept if needed.

  1. Introduction (1 min): Design an app for aliens with no concept of technology. Consider their capabilities. How would they understand interfaces?

  2. Individual Work (4 min): Participants prepare their contributions.

  3. Sharing Round (7 min): Each person shares with the group.

  4. Wrap-up (3 min): Reflect on common themes and insights.
