Objectives

  • Practice articulating design observations and user experience feedback - Develop awareness of how first impressions impact user adoption - Build empathy for new users encountering unfamiliar interfaces - Create a shared vocabulary for discussing user experience elements

Outcomes

Team members become more attuned to the user's first-time experience. Expect a shared understanding of design elements that build trust or create confusion. The team will generate a list of 'first impression best practices.' Increased empathy for new users will be noticeable in future design decisions.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preparation (5 minutes): Each participant thinks of 2-3 recently downloaded apps.

  2. Individual Reflection (3 minutes): Write down your immediate first impression of one app. Note what you noticed first, what you liked/disliked, and what confused you.

  3. Sharing Round (15-20 minutes): Each person has 2-3 minutes to show the app (or describe it) and share their first impression.

  4. Group Discussion (5-10 minutes): Identify common patterns in what creates positive vs. negative first impressions.
