  • Identify what makes apps truly essential versus merely convenient - Understand different user priorities and use cases within the team - Practice making design trade-offs under constraints - Generate discussions about core functionality and feature prioritization

Team members gain a clear understanding of essential functionality. They gain insights into different priorities. This activity improves the ability to make design decisions under constraints.
To focus on work, try a work-only version. This provides a different perspective. Adapt by modifying the scenario to focus on work-related apps.
Clarify if participants should consider work-related apps or all apps. Encourage detailed explanations. Notice patterns between roles and app choices.

  1. Present the scenario (2 minutes): You're on a desert island. You can keep only 5 apps (excluding basic phone functions).

  2. Individual Selection (5 minutes): Each person chooses 5 essential apps. Write down why each made the cut.

  3. Sharing Round (15-20 minutes): Each participant shares their choices and reasoning. Others ask questions or suggest alternatives.

  4. Group Analysis (5-10 minutes): Discuss patterns. What categories are most popular? What functionality seems essential? What surprised you?

  5. Design Insights (5 minutes): Wrap up by identifying design lessons. What makes an app essential? How do constraints change our perspective?
