Objectives

Participants will create a shared product direction, craft an inspiring vision statement, align on long-term goals, and establish a decision-making framework.

Outcomes

A finalized product vision statement, clear product direction, and an aligned team.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Individual Vision Writing (10 minutes): Each participant writes a one-sentence vision independently. Use this template: "For [target customer] who [customer need], [product name] is a [product category] that [key benefit]. Unlike [competitors/alternatives], our product [unique differentiation]." Alternatively, use: "[Product] will [transform/enable/create] [outcome] for [who]". Focus on aspiration, not the current state. Think 2-3 years ahead.

  2. Sharing & Discussion (12 minutes): Each person shares their vision statement. No critique during initial sharing. Identify common themes. Note interesting or unique perspectives. Discuss differences in target customer, key benefits, differentiation strategy, and scope.

  3. Synthesis (8 minutes): Combine the best elements from all versions. Craft a unified statement collaboratively. Test against these criteria: Is it inspiring and memorable? Is it clear about who it's for? Is it focused on customer value? Does it differentiate from alternatives? Does it guide decision-making? Finalize and document the vision.

Facilitator Tips

Keep the vision concise – one or two sentences max. Longer visions lose impact. Push for specific customer value. A good vision helps you decide what not to build. If the team can't align, it might signal deeper strategic misalignment. Address this separately. Post the vision prominently and reference it in future decisions. Revisit annually, or when the product pivots. Sometimes teams struggle with the 'differentiation' part; it's okay to acknowledge this is tricky.
