Contextual Inquiry

Contextual Inquiry brings research into the user's world. Instead of asking, watch them work. Observe them with their tools, facing real problems. You'll learn to see what users can't describe.

  • Ask neutral questions during observation.

  • Capture detailed, unbiased notes.

  • Synthesize observations into insights.

  • Know when to use contextual inquiry.

Outcomes

  • In-depth understanding of user behavior.

  • Insights beyond surveys or lab studies.

  • Identification of workarounds and unmet needs.

  • Solid base for user-centered design.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Preparation (30 minutes before):

  • Define research questions.

  • Prepare guides and templates.

  • Brief observers.

  • Coordinate logistics.

  1. Introduction (10 minutes):

  • Explain the purpose.

  • Establish a learner mindset.

  • Get permission to observe and record.

  • Ask them to work naturally.

  1. Observation (60-90 minutes):

  • Watch them work.

  • Ask clarifying questions ("What? Why?").

  • Note workarounds and frustrations.

  • Observe environment and tools.

  • Follow their lead.

  1. Wrap-Up (15 minutes):

  • Ask about unclear observations.

  • Probe on pain points.

  • Ask about missing information.

  • Thank them.

  1. Synthesis (60 minutes):

  • Document observations quickly.

  • Identify patterns and quotes.

  • Create affinity diagrams.

  • Extract design ideas.

Facilitator Tips

Stay curious and avoid judgment. Silence can reveal insights. Focus on actions, not just words. Document the environment too.

Avoid leading questions or suggesting fixes. Observe in their real environment, not a lab. Write down observations, not interpretations. Don't overbook sessions without time to analyze.

Debrief with partners immediately. Write notes within 24 hours. Look for patterns after several sessions. I've found it's easy to jump to conclusions early.
